Freedom To Roam

Wherever I be, my heart still returns -

No borders it knows and no countries;

Shows no papers, pays for no tickets -

imagine -

Homing in like a pigeon, it answers the call:

Wherever I be there's no distance at all.

Wherever I stride they are striding with me -

The mountains that stand and the streamlets that run,

The haze of the heather, the deer in the woods,

The rust of the bracken, the air, the speech,

The tick-bugs, the midges, the wind and the rain

And the clouds that rest on the rocks that remain -

And my friends whom I'm seeing as soon

As my heart is unleashed. You do what you like -

Close the borders, ban freedom and reason -

I have freedom to roam through the mist and the foam

And I sha'n't be detained by your prison.

You do what you like, and I'll do what I like,

And I'll go where I love, and I love where I go

As a season leads onto a season.

who knows

***

Will the mountains soothe me tonight?
Will they fill my little cup with silence,
Will the peaceful fog embrace my land?

But my little cup is full of holes,
And gusty winds are pillaging my land.

Will the mountains soothe me tonight?

Christmas In The City

Christmas, oh Christmas, there's no way to miss it,

Christmas, you get my toes curled!

When Christmas is coming it's always alarming -

Jesus, what's wrong with the world?..

Now that holiday time is the busiest time -

Makes you run and swear and fret;

There's the pudding to steam and the house to clean

And, the worst, there's the tree yet to get.

Christmas, oh Christmas, there's no way to miss it,

Christmas, you get my toes curled!

When Christmas is coming it's always alarming -

Jesus, what's wrong with the world?..

The city is not the best place for the trees

And never a twig I could find;

Looking high, looking low, not a sprout I saw,

And nothing to ease the mind.

Christmas, oh Christmas, there's no way to miss it,

Christmas, you get my toes curled!

When Christmas is coming it's always alarming -

Jesus, what's wrong with the world?..

So then to biggest of Tesco's I went,

Hardly making my way through the crowd;

I was kicked, I was sick, and my pockets were picked,

And every last tree was sold out!

Christmas, oh Christmas, there's no way to miss it,

Christmas, you get my toes curled!

When Christmas is coming it's always alarming -

Jesus, what's wrong with the world?..

Then a man came to me, said he had “just the tree” -

I listened, all enthusiastic -

“With all colours ablaze, it will stand for decades

As it's made of the smelliest plastic!”.

Christmas, oh Christmas, there's no way to miss it,

Christmas, you get my toes curled!

When Christmas is coming it's always alarming -

Who Kenneth

Well-equipped for the journey you go —

It's a path no-one kenneth but God.

An earthly melody is broken

And yet another is awoken

The angels' song is but a token

As you are singing the unspoken,

Forever of the music of the spheres

Beyond the ken of singers, spies ans seers.

You left the flash-ken fast when the ken-burster came,

You let him have it all — your pain, your name, your fame —

And light you went — why now, what's the plot —

Who kenneth? Only God. - Lest we forgot:

The earth grew emptier; the Heavens, not.

Your joy remains...

Chrysanthemums... Whose word is that?
Why cannot you be plum, or apple, rose, poppy?

Chrysanthemum... The poet weeps in dread,
His tongue a-twisted, mind not coping...

No matter, though. You are a welcome guest,

Great balls of gold amid the squelching mud!

To bloom in winter is the plum's great quest,
The elixir of love brews in the rose's bud.

- To bloom in purity of snow, however,
Is not a virtue; nor flummoxing the sober;

But blooming all alone and challenging the weather
And shining in the dullness of October.

Her Excuse For Loving, in Reply to Ben Jonson

I see your hundred of grey hairs
Speaking of seven and forty years;
I love you every inch of soul -
You only say that I'm too foul.
Of course - why would a Poet care
Of her twice younger him in year?
He knows the mysteries of space
And lives a life of cosmic grace...
I'm no poet; yet my heart
Is an artist of its art;
Try I might, I can't embrace
Nor your figure nor your phase;
I but follow you with ardour -
Like or not, I love you harder
Every day and every line
Till the world for love may die.
